BURST is a preeminant  Glass Couture runway show; vetted for the highest standards of artistic excellence. BURST is a professionally produced moving exhibition that builds a sophisticated bridge between the art and fashion world. All ensembles must be comprised of at least 50% glass, safe to wear, and must be astonishing.

Selected artists for the 2014 production of BURST will receive incredible marketing materials, opportunity for media exposure, and an exhilarating experience of contributing to something magical. This year we are very excited to announce that in edition to the runway show, a Best of Burst category will be juried by a selection of glass and fashion experts. This smaller selection of  ensembles will be featured in a professional fashion shoot; from this group one ensemble will be selected as the finest example of  skill and ingenuity to be awarded a  $1,000 bursary.

GLASS

Preference will be awarded to submissions that incorporate conceptual or formal elements of glass as the primary focus and that it remains visually obvious in the overall design. Artists are encouraged to use different techniques such as glass bead work, blown glass, flame worked, cast, kiln formed, assemblage or stained glass. Designs may also incorporate mixed media such as light, welded parts and electronics to create a truly unique experience, (parallel craftmanship is expected). Each creative endeavour must be intended to be worn on the runway and must not exceed 40 inches in width.

2014 BURST : International Artist Call for Glass Couture.

COUTURE

An expectation of sewing and dressmaking skills is implied; ensembles must be finished to proper sewing standards. BURST will not except pieces that have unfinished hems or make-shift sewing. All ensembles must be finished in both the areas of glass and dress-making. We encourage collaboration of glass artists and fashion designers.

SAFTEY

Safety is always a primary focus with glass. Safety for the models wearing your glass couture on stage and to the audience in attendance must be in your fore-mind when developing concepts. We carefully examine designs for any sharp bits of glass and we require work to be properly ground to avoid any injuries. We also suggest that consideration be taken for the weight of the garment when possible. Our models are professionals and understand that your glass couture design may be very cumbersome and slow to move in, however some consideration for their comfort level in the early design stages can make a great deal of difference in your model's ability to show off your design with greater ease.

WHEN

BURST takes place in May during the annual festival Glassport, (just around the time many glass studios begin their warm season shut down). Both Glassport and BURST are intended to raise awareness of the wide spectrum of creativity found in contemporary glass art. There will be a host of other glass related activities of interest to participating artists.

BURST will present:

Saturday evening Sep 20, 2014

WHO

BURST is accepting submissions from local, national and international destinations. If accepted you must attend the event as each participant is responsible for assisting their assigned model with getting dressed in glass. Collaboration teams are considered.

WHERE

BURST takes place in downtown Calgary, the heart of Canada's new west and the fastest growing city in the world.  In 2013, Burst took place in the stunning new architecture of Eighth Avenue.

SUBMISSION PACKAGES:

Your proposal package is meant to showcase your past work while introducing your new project plans. The glass couture piece does not need to be completed at this time; however, we are looking for images of what the pieces will look like. There is no limit on how many submissions you can enter, but please note that we may select more than one of your creative endeavours, and you must be prepared to complete and transport each selection on time.

BURST is free to enter and there are no participation fees for artist/designers. All participants are responsible for their own production, travel  and shipping costs. BURST will provide each selected applicant with a letter of invitation in order to help each artist/designer apply for local production or travel grants. We will also provide media kits if you wish to create your own crowdsourcing campaging such as Kickstarter.

Please download the fashion croquis to clearly present your proposed design.
